Narasimha Jayanthi

Today is Narasimha Jayanthi, Lord Narasimha's birthday.

Once upon a time, there lived a king named Hiranyaksha. One day, he hid Goddes Boomadevi down under water. Boomadevi went crying to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu then took the Avataram of Varaha. Varaha killed Hiranyaksha and brought goddes Boomadevi back to her place. Hiranyaksha's younger brother, Hiranyakashipu, heard what Vishnu had done, and was filled with anger. He then meditated on Lord Bramha. After few days, Lord Bramha appeared and asked, "What do you want?" Hiranyakashipu replied, "I should never die."

"No, that cannot be given. Everybody who is born has to die." Replied Bramha.

Hiranyakashipu then said, "I shouldn't be killed by weapons, bow and arrows or maces.

I shouldn't be killed by man, insect or animals.

I shouldn't be killed in, out or up the house or any other place.

I shouldn't be killed in morning, afternoon, evening or in the night."

Bramha granted his wish and left the place.

Hiranyakashipu soon became the king. He had a son named Praklada. Praklada always prayed to Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu did not like Vishnu, because he killed Hiranyaksha, Hiranyakashipu's brother. He sent Praklada to school. The teachers tried to teach him to say Om Hiranyaya namaha. But Praklada said the opposite. Om Narayanaya namaha. Hiranyakashipu tried many times but it did not work. One day, he called Praklada to his lap. He asked, "Son, what have you learnt in your school?" "Om Narayanaya namaha." Replied Praklada. Hiranyakashipu was frustrated and pushed Praklada from his lap. He then planned of throwing him into the jail. He then threw him into jail the next morning. Praklada sang beautiful songs on Vishnu and Vishnu saved him. Hiranyakashipu was very angry on hearing this. He then planned of throwing Praklada down the mountains. Praklada kept on saying, Om Narayanaya namaha, and pleased on this, Vishnu saved him once again. Hiranyakashipu then planned of putting Praklada into fire. But Praklada's songs made Vishnu pleased every time, and he was saved. Hiranyakashipu then set an elephant on Praklada. Praklada's beautiful songs made the elephant throw garlands on him.

Hiranyakashipu was running out of ideas. He planned of throwing Praklada into a snake pit. But the snakes did not bite him, they kissed him. Hiranyakashpu's final plan, was giving Praklada a poisonous drink. Praklada drank it happily saying Om Narayanaya namaha, and he was saved.

Hiranyakashipu was furious. He asked Praklada, "Where is this Vishnu?" Praklada calmly said, "Father he is everywhere. He is even inside you and he is even inside me." Hiranyakashipu asked, "So, is he in this pillar?" Praklada replied, "Yes father, he is in this pillar."

Hiranyakashipu then broke the pillar with his mace. That is the moment when Vishnu took the Avataram of Lord Narasimha, lion headed, but man's body. He was neither an animal, nor a man. He was an animal-man. He didn't kill him with a weapon, he killed him with his nails. He didn't kill him in morning or evening, he killed him at Sunset. He didn't kill him inside or outside, he killed him at the palace's Vaasal Padi.

Narasimha was very angry. Praklada and the other devas calmed Narasimha down with beautiful songs. Narasimha blessed Praklada. Praklada soon became a king and became a star.

Om Namo Narayanaya Namaha

Om Narasimhaya Namaha

Long Lost Sleep

After a long, exhausting day, the only thing all of us look forward to is SLEEP. So, as soon as you finish off the last crumbs on your dinner plate, you fling yourself onto your bed, rest yourself in a comfortable position, get your pillow nice and fluffed up, and throw the blankets on yourself. But then... You just realised that you still have your big, wobbly earrings on. So you throw back the blankets and remove your earrings and leave them in their box. And then you're back in your bed, and just as your eyelids are about to close... You realise that you haven't brushed your teeth. So, yet again, your throw back the blankets and get off the bed, letting the annoying, creaky sound fill your head. And then you throw open the door to your bathroom, get your brush ready and squeeze toothpaste onto it, but... The tube seemed to have a hole on the back, which you sadly hadn't noticed. And you get toothpaste all over your hands. Fuming, you wash your hands and get things done...

So Close, Yet So Far

What you knew you had right beside you What you never knew might leave you What you had neglected for days What you wished was still there, within your gaze. That miniscule amount of hope  That you feel lingering close by You could open out your arms, embrace it, But suddenly it's high in the sky. Once within your grasp, But now away from you, Don't waste a moment on a wee gasp, Time won't stop, and the moving hope too. Each moment is to be caught, Each memory to be cherished, Hold them carefully in your arms, Before they shall vanish. The consistent inkling when you feel, Something close, yet so far, Is only because you know yourself, That it is within your grasp, but not within your confidence. If you're positive enough that you can hold it, The 'it' that is mysterious and something only you know, You can hold the precious 'it', Clutch it tight, don't let it go. You must be close to the end of the day, With its cliffs and slopes and Rocky slides,...

Stars

Shining in the vast night sky, I see them from afar. Dominated by the brighter moon, There glimmer the stars. Mostly hidden by the cruel shadows, Or by the thick, misty clouds. But they do not give up, they still glimmer on, They make their voice be heard loud. Even though they're hardly seen, Even though they're hardly thought of, They know that someday they will be, Thought of, honoured and loved. So take an inspiration from stars, Show your true essence, Continue to shimmer, ignore the darkness, Because one day it'll fear your presence.
