The Breakfast Incident

Usually, when I eat at the dining table, my sister sits next to me.

And we while away the long hours of breakfast, lunch and dinner by chatting until our parents come and shout at us.

So today, when I was having breakfast, my sister came and occupied her usual spot next to me.

We started talking about Roblox and Among Us and other video games, and then my sister did something ridiculous. And really, REALLY gross.

She dipped her finger in her peanut chutney and wiped it on my bottle. My eyes widened as I hastily pulled my precious bottle away from  her. "Eww!!! That's SO gross!" I said, as I fumbled to wipe the chutney away.

I'm sure you already know that I'm a tit-for-tat kind of girl, so I dipped MY finger in MY chutney and tried to do the same. My finger barely brushed the surface of my sister's bottle, but get this: it wasn't even the chutne-dipped finger : it was just my normal finger, which was still wet from my washed hands.

My sister squealed like a pig and called for my mom. That's what she does when she wants to get away with something: she summons my parents.

My mom came striding to the dining table. She asked both of us if we didn't know how to eat. My sister, then, with her classic tearless-yet-pitiful face told my mom that I had streaked her bottle with chutney.

But then I, defensively, informed my mom that my sister did it first.

I braced for an epic lecture about minding my own business and eating fast, but I almost felt like whooping when she turned to my sister, scolding her and telling her that I wouldn't have done it if she hadn't in the first place.

My mom stalked off, and my sister kept shooting me angry donkey faces. Then, my leg accidentally BRUSHED my sister's, and she started squealing yet again.

This time it was my father's turn to come. But my father wasn't a person who'd take any nonsense. So he told my sister sharply to sit across from me, and my sister staggered to the other side of the table, keeping her puppy face on.

A few minutes passed, and I'd started playing with my piece of idli. My sister kept staring at me with the same angry donkey faces. So I told her to eat her food, and she summoned my parents again.

My father came in again, and this time, he grabbed a tray and made it stand in such a way that it blocked my sister's face.

I was grateful for it. And a few minutes later, I rested my leg on my sister's previously occupied chair.

My sister pulled her chair towards her, and I pulled it back. This tug-of-war game went on for a minute, until my sister got up from her chair and pulled the chair which had posed as the rope earlier. "Mine!" She screamed.

"Get off, you idiot," I said. She then screamed for my parents again. And this time, I knew that I was done by the death look my mom was giving me when she came.

"Eat," she said. "None of you have brains! And if you two stare at each other once more, I won't talk to you."

That did the trick. I quietly resumed playing with my idli, and my sister was staring at my mom with wide eyes and an open jaw - she should've assumed it made her look pitiful, but I think it only made her look stupid.

My mom scowled at her, and my sister too, silently continued having her idli.

After my mom had left, we still continued scowling at each other and kicking each other under the table. But then I FINALLY finished my breakfast and went over to the sink to wash my plate.

And now I'm writing this post, and I'm also waiting for my sister to give me a nice apology (which I'll of COURSE turn down).

And yes, I'm still yet to tame my sister.

  1. Omg Shriyan!!! What a narrative!! I was waiting with bated breath to see what turn the events would take next!! The story (which is of course based on a true incident 😂) is very funny yet gripping and wants the readers to read further to know what would’ve happened next!! You are mastering the art of keeping your readers enthused till the last line!
Sisters are truly godsends ! Even if you fight with your sister , you don’t have to worry about finding ways to make up and sort things out - you can just resume from where you stopped! It’s good that you documented this incident ; once you little girls grow up and get busy with your own lives, this post will remind you of all the fun and lively banter that you girls shared in your childhood, and you girls will laugh about it !
Lovely write up baby kutty ❤️❤️Keep writing such funny stories !!!

Long Lost Sleep

After a long, exhausting day, the only thing all of us look forward to is SLEEP. So, as soon as you finish off the last crumbs on your dinner plate, you fling yourself onto your bed, rest yourself in a comfortable position, get your pillow nice and fluffed up, and throw the blankets on yourself. But then... You just realised that you still have your big, wobbly earrings on. So you throw back the blankets and remove your earrings and leave them in their box. And then you're back in your bed, and just as your eyelids are about to close... You realise that you haven't brushed your teeth. So, yet again, your throw back the blankets and get off the bed, letting the annoying, creaky sound fill your head. And then you throw open the door to your bathroom, get your brush ready and squeeze toothpaste onto it, but... The tube seemed to have a hole on the back, which you sadly hadn't noticed. And you get toothpaste all over your hands. Fuming, you wash your hands and get things done...

So Close, Yet So Far

What you knew you had right beside you What you never knew might leave you What you had neglected for days What you wished was still there, within your gaze. That miniscule amount of hope  That you feel lingering close by You could open out your arms, embrace it, But suddenly it's high in the sky. Once within your grasp, But now away from you, Don't waste a moment on a wee gasp, Time won't stop, and the moving hope too. Each moment is to be caught, Each memory to be cherished, Hold them carefully in your arms, Before they shall vanish. The consistent inkling when you feel, Something close, yet so far, Is only because you know yourself, That it is within your grasp, but not within your confidence. If you're positive enough that you can hold it, The 'it' that is mysterious and something only you know, You can hold the precious 'it', Clutch it tight, don't let it go. You must be close to the end of the day, With its cliffs and slopes and Rocky slides,...

Stars

Shining in the vast night sky, I see them from afar. Dominated by the brighter moon, There glimmer the stars. Mostly hidden by the cruel shadows, Or by the thick, misty clouds. But they do not give up, they still glimmer on, They make their voice be heard loud. Even though they're hardly seen, Even though they're hardly thought of, They know that someday they will be, Thought of, honoured and loved. So take an inspiration from stars, Show your true essence, Continue to shimmer, ignore the darkness, Because one day it'll fear your presence.
