When you want to purchase something, or do something, have you wondered, do I NEED it or do I just WANT it?
When you WANT something, you want it only for your entertainment, which is not necessary.
Example: You want a smart watch, but you already have a regular watch. Do you need the watch, or do you just want it?
When you NEED something, you need it for your survival, which is essential.
Example: You need a new shirt, since you don't have a comfortable one. Do you need it or want it?
You can spend all your money to go abroad or live in luxury, but you can also save it so that you can use it at times of terrible need, or better, save it to donate it to those who need it much more than us.
Look at people who live in streets, who don't have what we have. But we also don't have what they have. Most of us don't know how to be grateful for what we have, while they do, because they never get what they want, neither do they get what they need. Yet they are grateful.
Example: You live in a bungalow with a big TV, swimming pool and all the other luxuries you can get. Yet you think that's not enough.
People who don't even have a home are grateful for even a single scrap of food they get.
We can have all the money and luxury we want, we can have what we want, but not too much of it. We can have what we want but we shouldn't let it get to our head. Even with all the luxury and power, you can keep your head low, be generous and kind, and not be boastful. This is what everyone needs, in them. It should also be what they want. What you want, you get. What you need, you get it too.
But what you have (which is good) you cherish.

Shriyandhaa Kanna! Your thoughts are way ahead of your age, baby! It is hard to believe that these deep thoughts have been conceived by a 11 year old ! And you are bang on ! Yes, I think most of us have started to overlook the thin line between want and need , and in that process , stopped appreciating what we have ! And come to think of it, there are so many reasons behind it - affordability , jealousy, competition… our ancestors lived in much simpler times ! Also, the point that you’ve made about how the underprivileged people would give anything in exchange for a day of our lives , is very touching.
ReplyDeleteWhen there are kids like you who can understand the difference between want and need , and are sensitive enough to the pain of others, it restores my faith in the future . Kids like you are sure to grow up and be able to achieve the best and greatest for yourselves, and in the process , propel the society forward too!
Loads of love, Shriyandhaa kanna! You rock, as always !
Beautifully written kanna 👏👏
